Frequently Asked Questions

Q:Is JSON View Parser free to use?

Yes. JSON View Parser is completely free, with no sign-up, account, or installation required. Just open the page and start working with your JSON.

Q:Is my data safe? Do you upload my JSON to a server?

No. All parsing, formatting, validation, and analysis happen entirely inside your web browser on your own device. Your JSON is never uploaded, stored, or transmitted to us or any third party, so it is safe to paste sensitive data such as API responses or configuration files.

Q:What is the difference between formatting (beautifying) and minifying JSON?

Formatting (also called beautifying or pretty-printing) adds line breaks and indentation to make JSON easy to read. Minifying does the opposite: it removes all unnecessary whitespace to make the file as small as possible, which is useful for sending data over a network. JSON View Parser can do both with one click.

Q:Why does it say my JSON is invalid?

The most common causes are trailing commas after the last item, using single quotes instead of double quotes, unquoted keys, missing or mismatched braces and brackets, or comments (standard JSON does not allow comments). The tool shows the exact line and column of the first error so you can fix it quickly.

Q:Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Because everything runs in your browser, very large documents (several megabytes or more) may take longer to render, but typical API responses and configuration files are handled instantly.

Q:Can I use it offline?

All processing is done locally, so your data stays offline. You only need an internet connection to load the page itself the first time.

Q:Which browsers are supported?

JSON View Parser works in all modern browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari, on both desktop and mobile.

Q:Does it support comments or trailing commas (JSON5)?

Standard JSON does not allow comments or trailing commas. JSON View Parser validates against the standard, so you will need to manually correct any non-standard syntax to make your data valid JSON.

Q:What is the difference between JSON and JSON5?

JSON5 is an extension of JSON that aims to be easier for humans to write and maintain by allowing features like comments, trailing commas, and unquoted keys. However, JSON5 is not valid standard JSON and requires special parsers.

Q:Can I use single quotes in JSON?

No. The JSON specification requires double quotes (") for both keys and string values. Single quotes (') are a common cause of validation errors.

Q:Are keys case-sensitive in JSON?

Yes. In JSON, 'Name', 'name', and 'NAME' are considered three completely different keys.

Q:What is the MIME type for JSON?

The official MIME type for JSON data is 'application/json'.

Q:How can I handle dates in JSON?

JSON does not have a built-in date type. The most common practice is to represent dates as strings using the ISO 8601 format (e.g., "2024-03-20T12:00:00Z").

Q:Is JSON faster than XML?

Generally, yes. JSON is more compact (lower character count) and maps more naturally to the data structures used in most programming languages, making it faster to parse and transmit over a network.

Q:Can I validate my JSON against a schema here?

Our tool currently focuses on syntax validation (checking if your JSON is well-formed). Full JSON Schema validation is a feature we may consider for future updates.

Q:Does this tool support large JSON files?

Yes, we can handle multi-megabyte files. Since everything runs locally in your browser, the limit is primarily your device's memory. For files larger than 10MB, the 'Collapsible Tree' view might be slower to render than the 'Pretty Print' view.

Q:What is a 'breadcrumb' in the tree view?

Breadcrumbs show you the exact path to the currently selected or hovered element in the JSON hierarchy (e.g., users > [0] > profile > email), which is very helpful for complex nested data.

Q:Can I search for keys in the output?

Yes. There is a search bar at the top of the output panel that allows you to filter the tree view or find specific text within the formatted JSON.

Q:Is there a keyboard shortcut to format?

Yes. You can press Ctrl + Shift + F (or Alt + Shift + F) to instantly format your JSON input. Press Alt + / to see the full list of available shortcuts.
